ROSEBURG, Ore. – The Umpqua Valley Audubon Society and Roseburg Public Library invite the community to a Facebook Live streaming event with conservationist Paul Engelmeyer at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Engelmeyer will present “Land-Sea Conservation Issues and Strategies,” covering topics such as marine reserves, salmon conservation efforts and the Endangered Species Act-listed marbled murrelet.

Engelmeyer’s love of fishing and forests brought him to the Pacific Northwest in 1975. Since then, he has been a tree planter and climber for cones; worked on Oregon State University’s marbled murrelet research team; served on the Salmon Advisory Subpanel and Habitat Committee for the Pacific Fishery Management Council; helped launch the MidCoast Watersheds Council; and helped form the Cape Perpetua Collaborative on the central Oregon Coast, among many other efforts.

He has managed Portland Audubon’s Ten Mile sanctuaries since 1990. The basin is nestled between Cummins Creek and Rock Creek wildernesses south of Yachats and includes multiple parcels totaling 336 acres that are secured in conservation status. In 2012, the Cummins Creek / Ten Mile landscape unit was designated by Birdlife International as a globally significant bird area for the murrelet.

Also, the nearshore area from north of Yachats to south of Heceta Head has been designated the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve and a Seabird Protection Area, one of five such areas in Oregon. The others are nearshore areas at Cape Falcon near Manzanita, Cascade Head near Lincoln City, Otter Rock between Depoe Bay and Newport, and Redfish Rocks near Port Orford.

A moderated Q&A session will follow the presentation. Questions may be submitted before the event to Library staff at library@cityofroseburg.org or 541-492-7051. Alternately, viewers who have a Facebook account may post questions during the event by commenting on the live stream.
