City buildings close Monday for Labor Day

ROSEBURG, Ore. – City of Roseburg buildings will be closed Monday, Sept. 2, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

The Roseburg Planning Commission meeting that would normally be held on Monday, Sept. 2, has been rescheduled for Monday, Sept. 16.

Roseburg City Hall, the Roseburg Public Safety Center, Roseburg Public Library and other City buildings will be closed to the public. Police and firefighters will continue to provide public safety throughout the holiday.

Roseburg parks, the Fir Grove Park Splash Pad and the Stewart Park Golf Course will be open to the public throughout the holiday weekend. The free interactive spray park is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. until closing for the season at 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2.

Lobbies at City Hall, 900 S.E. Douglas Ave., and the Public Safety Center, 700 S.E. Douglas Ave., are normally open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. Library hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Labor Day is observed on the first Monday in September. First celebrated in the 1880s, Labor Day is a federal holiday recognizing American workers’ contributions to the country’s prosperity and social and economic strength. On February 21, 1887, Oregon became the first state to pass a law recognizing Labor Day – followed by Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. In 1894, Congress passed a bill to make Labor Day a federal holiday and President Grover Cleveland signed the bill into law.
