Learn about Nickel Mountain Sept. 15
ROSEBURG, Ore. – Roseburg Public Library invites the community to learn about Nickel Mountain mining and smelting operations and remediation efforts during an in-person presentation at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15.
Program presenter Larry Broeker, who worked as a geologist with Umpqua National Forest from 1990 to 2008, will provide an in-depth look at Nickel Mountain, which is four miles west of Riddle in Douglas County. The free program is open to the public and will be held in the Deer Creek Room at the library, 1409 NE Diamond Lake Blvd. in Roseburg.
Broeker will cover several topics including a geologic overview of the Klamath Mountains, a chronological history of mine activities, formation of a nickel laterite deposit, bygone mining and smelting operations, and demolition and remediation efforts.
Mining and smelting operations were conducted at the site by M.A. Hanna Company from 1954 to 1987 and by Glenbrook Nickel Company from 1987 to 1998. About 650 people were employed at those operations in the 1960s and 1970s.
The library will remain open until 8 p.m. for the event. For more information, contact Roseburg Public Library staff at 541-492-7050 or library@cityofroseburg.org.
