Serve your community on a City commission

ROSEBURG, Ore. – Looking for a new way to serve your community? Consider serving on a City commission.

The City is taking applications for vacancies on the Roseburg Library, Homeless and Public Works commissions, which serve in an advisory capacity to the City Council. Each commission has one vacancy.

People appointed to these volunteer positions serve a three-year term unless they’re serving the remainder of a term. The volunteer appointed to the Public Works Commission will finish a term that expires Dec. 31, 2025. The three positions remain open until filled. Applications will be reviewed weekly.

Applicants for the Library Commission must live within Roseburg’s urban growth boundary. Applicants for the Homeless and Public Works commissions must live in city limits. Residency requirements are different for each commission and may vary between seats on the same commission.

The Library Commission meets at 4 p.m. on the third Tuesdays of each month. The group considers efficient, effective library operations; develops and recommends long-range plans for library services; reviews current trends, library-related technology, and terms and conditions for contracts and working relationships with private and public agencies; assists with annual reports; and advocates for the library budget, events and programs. Library Commission Chair Andrea Zielinski, who is also a City Councilor, will review applications, contact applicants for possible interviews and recommend a candidate’s appointment to the Mayor and Council.

The Homeless Commission meets at 11 a.m. on the fourth Monday of each month to research and make recommendations to the City Council, review terms and conditions of contracts and working relationships with private and public agencies regarding services for unhoused people, and receive and consider comments and suggestions from the public and local businesses regarding homelessness issues. The commission chair is Mayor Larry Rich.

The Public Works Commission meets at 3:30 p.m. on second Thursdays of each month to provide long-range planning and strategies for financing of capital improvements including sidewalks, lighting and storm drainage; and to consider rules governing operations of the water system and its rate structure. The commission chair is Councilor Ellen Porter.

Online applications can be found via the City’s “Commissions” webpage. Residents also can request applications via email at info@cityofroseburg.org. Completed online applications should be emailed to info@cityofroseburg.org. In addition, residents can pick up applications by visiting the Administration Department at City Hall, 900 SE Douglas Ave., and then mail in applications to that address or drop applications off at the City Hall lobby.
